Who Needs a Marine Licence?

Which licence you require depends on the type of marine vehicle you wish the operate. At the Yamaha Marine Academy, we can provide the theory and practical elements for the licencing course that suits your needs..

RMS rules dictate a General Boat Licence is required by any person wanting to operate a boat in a recreational capacity at a speed of more than 10 knots, or 18.5km/h. That’s about running speed for the average adult. A General Boat Licence course will provide you with the knowledge and required exam to obtain a license from the RMS to drive a boat of any size in any recreational capacity.

A Personal Water Craft (PWC) licence is required by any person wanting to operate a Personal Water Craft (PWC) at any speed. Obtaining a PWC licence includes the General Boat Licence, allowing the holder to operate both types of water craft. A PWC licence course will provide you with the qualifications to obtain your combined General Boat and PWC license from the RMS to operate a PWC or a boat in a recreational capacity.

If you already have a General Boat Licence and would like to operate a Personal Water Craft (PWC) a two-hour course is all that is required upgrade your licence.

Obtaining any RMS-issued marine license in New South Wales requires a pass mark in a theory exam held at the end of all courses. Our comprehensive on-water and theory training courses are held in Penrith and the Sutherland Shire areas of New South Wales, and are available seven days per week all year round.

The experienced YMA team will teach you all the rules and regulations needed for enjoyable safe boating, and provide you with a high-level of practical experience that will prepare you for the exam. This approach ensures you will enjoy Australia’s beautiful waterways in a safe and confident manner once you obtain your licence.
