Staff Review | 2024 MT-09
Ron’s Temptation to The Dark Side of Japan
It has been a decade since Yamaha’s MT-09 Hyper Naked motorcycle entered the Australian market, combining innovative design , cutting edge technology, and thrilling performance.
Ron Meigan, a long-term fan of Yamaha's triple-cylinder CP3 engine, is considering swapping from his Tracer 9GT to the 2024 MT-09 and put his hand up to provide a staff evaluation of the new bike.
One of the first things I noticed about the new MT-09 is its refreshed styling. The front-end design of the outgoing model was a bit polarising. This time around, Yamaha has managed to strike a balance between aggressive aesthetics and functionality with this new design; it looks great. The sharp, angular lines combined with the sleek headlamp give the bike a distinct look that aligns with the "Dark Side of Japan" theme.
The tweaks made to the rider triangle deliver a more confidence-inspiring ride. The repositioned handlebars, upgraded suspension system, and adjusted seating position have drastically improved the bike's comfort level and fit; it felt like an extension of my body from the moment I stepped on. As a result, improved knee grip significantly reduces pressure on the wrists and back. The seat is plush and feels like an aftermarket comfort seat.
“The next-gen quickshifter deserves special mention for its smoothness; it makes gear changes feel seamless”
Performance and Handling
I have always been a big fan of the CP3 engine, and after riding the new MT-09, I won't be changing my mind anytime soon. The triple-cylinder engine with the upgraded ECU continues to deliver potent torque and a top-end power mix but with a smoother and more controlled power delivery, thanks to the new suite of riding modes and the ability to quickly adjust individual settings and even save your favourite custom settings.
The handling improvements delivered by the new suspension are also instantly noticeable. The front end feels more stable, and the new Brembo radial master cylinder has improved the braking feel, offering a firm, responsive action right from the initial lever application. I prefer setting the adjustable brake lever a little closer to the bar, and the MT-09's braking system has no issue handling this set-up.
Technology and Usability
The new-look display is large, clear and super easy to read. The intuitive button layout and joystick interface provide simple navigation through the bike's various settings. The next-gen quickshifter deserves special mention for its smoothness; it makes gear changes feel seamless.
Riding Experience
The MT-09's upright riding position gives it an almost motard feel, adding to the bike's versatility. Whether carving through twisty mountain roads or navigating urban traffic, the MT-09 feels agile and responsive. The wide range of riding modes caters to different riding conditions and preferences.
Accessories
Yamaha offers a comprehensive list of accessories for the MT-09, allowing riders to tailor the bike to their specific needs. I would add a Racing Line exhaust to enhance the sound of the excellent CP3 engine. For touring duties, I would add a top box and a screen. This will provide me with a perfect balance between the sporty nature of the MT-09 and the touring features of the Tracer 9GT—the best of both worlds.
Conclusion
For those in the market for a new MT-09, the toughest decision might be choosing between the standard model , the MT-09SP, and the MT-09 Y-AMT with auto transmission. The standard model in Midnight Cyan is an excellent choice and gets my vote.
