Viking Enters Winter Olympics

Yamaha’s all-new Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle (ROV), the Viking, will assist organisers on the slopes of Sochi, the Russian Black Sea resort location of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games.

Yamaha Motor CIS is set to provide more than 320 vehicles for the Sochi Olympic Games, from snowmobiles to golf cars, including all-new three seater Viking.

The Viking will be used on rugged terrain while Yamaha snowmobiles will be used at the Mountain Cluster venues to transport technicians and athletes. Golf cars will be provided in different layouts, some of which have been specially designed for people with disabilities.

President of the Sochi 2014 Organising Committee Dmitry Chernyshenko notes: “We welcome Yamaha as an Official Supplier of the Sochi 2014 Games. Yamaha is a leader of the Russian recreational vehicle market and offers a wide range of products for sports, recreation and work. Yamaha vehicles will allow the Games to function at high speed and add even more Olympic drive to the event.

The Sochi Winter Olympics start on 7 February and end on 23 February, 2014. New Zealand will be fielding a squad of between 14 and 20 athletes across both ice and snow sports with the majority ofathletes competing in the freeski and snowboard events.

Yamaha’s Viking is an all-new three seater utility vehicle that has recently been released in New Zealand. The Viking features a high torque, 700cc single-cylinder powerplant, sophistcated Ultramatic drive system with Hi/Lo option and switchable 2WD/4WD/Diff lock with all wheel downhill engine braking. Its tilt tray is designed to accept a standard-sized pallet and tyre width fits neatly within plough rows.
