Lancaster and Yamaha take double-digit lead after Finke Day 1

10 Jun 2012

Western Australian ATV racer, Ryan Lancaster, has taken an impressive 28-minute victory over his rivals in his first ever off-road event.

Lancaster, 25, from Perth (WA) got a good start aboard his YFZ450R at Day 1 of the 2012 Tatts Finke Desert Race and had a clean run for the 226-kilometer dash to Finke, in the Northern Territory.

Just the return trip to Alice Springs now stands in the way of Lancaster achieving a victory he says would be the “highlight of his career”.

“I rode my own race, I rode smart,” the professional ATV motocross rider said. “The bike handled really well, I made sure to look after it so I could get it home in one piece.

“My plan for tomorrow is just to ride smart and get the bike home.

“It would mean a lot to me if I can win. It’s the first time I’ve ever done anything on the enduro side and this race is so prestigious.

“Winning would be the highlight of my career, it would even top the Australian titles that I’ve won.”

Lancaster said the event was a lot bigger than he had expected.

“It’s been a bit overwhelming, in a good way,” he said. “It’s fantastic — there are so many supporters, lining the course for the whole 226-kilometers. It’s the biggest race in Australia.”

He said it had taken a bit of adjusting to get used to the terrain after competing in motocross.

“The biggest thing was getting my head around the duration — we race for 20-minutes. Going for two and a half hours is very different,” he said.

“The course is also vastly different, but my motocross experience came out in the infamous whoops — I enjoyed those.

“The first 100-kilometres was the hardest. It’s really hard-packed with hard holes.

“The speed is fun — we’re reaching 130 to 135 kilometres per hour out here. In motocross, we’re lucky to get to 70.”
